Laugh China Doll (2020 Remaster)

RTW Edward’s first solo album is just an outright classic, demonstrating a minimal but effective synth-pop sound that is otherwise only hinted at by contemporaneous LPD records like Faces in the Fire or The Tower. “Lilith’s Daughter” is stunning for the scenario it depicts; an example of how content and delivery can both be funny and spooky at the same time. “Paradise Then” and “Atomic Roses” hint at New Romanticism (and “Lady Sunshine” its love object) but the record remains wholly uncommercial. Favorite track: Lilith's Daughter.

mattyg107 First solo release and there's moments where it sounds like the Dot's album being recorded at the same time (The Tower) which just means it's that good. Audio snobs like myself will be happy this 2020 remaster removes muddiness that plagued the 2005 remastered version... Splendid, now it makes the room shake proper and sounds pristine. Other reviewer is correct, you'll be singing this one in the shower ha:) Favorite track: Find The Lady.

about

Dust to dust. Such was the fate of the master tape of my first solo album. In short, NEVER store a tape in a garden shed. "Laugh China Doll" was recorded over a couple of weekends on borrowed equipment with the notable exception of "Requiem" where long term friend Patrick Q. Wright provided all the music. Another fine contribution can be heard on "Lisa's Funeral" where Pat White provided a wonderful guitar part. The cover was ripped from a library book (not by me!). This reissue is dedicated with love to the memory of Marylou. A big thank you also to Ray Steeg who cleaned and restored the music from an original vinyl copy.
